PGO starts out with Individual Play: 1983 - 7 players, Americana Club (The old Playboy Club, Lake Geneva, WI), Brute course. Individual play: Dave Hanson; 108 1984 - 10 players, Americana Club, Briarpatch course.
Individual play: Ron Vermilye; 92 1985 - 16 players, Lake Lawn Lodge,
Individual play. Roger Miller; 87 1986 - 20 players, Lake Lawn Lodge,
Individual play Roger Miller; 82 PGO Shifts to 4
man-team Scramble format; 3 drives per player: 1988 - 24 players, Americana Club.
Brute Course. Kurt Dickey, Steve Schaich, Alan Anderson, Bill Pott;
-2 under par score; Thunderstorm in middle of the round demoralizes
returning champions Johnson, Macko, O'Day and Stuckey. They walk off
the course refusing to play after making the turn. 1989 - 20 players, Americana.
Briarpatch course. Kurt Dickey, Steve Schaich, Rich Macko, Denny
Vermilye. They come to the 18th hole needing Schaich's drive which
has to clear the water. He makes it, they go on to win. 1991 - 40 players, Art Habegger, Steve Hepburn, Roger Limbach, Keith Wilson; -10; Clutch putting and an all around good day finishes them at 10 under par, setting a PGO record that hasn't been equaled yet. Keith Wilson makes a sweeping 40 foot putt on the double 9 and 13 green. 1992 - 44 players, Ron Bedell, Ron Vermilye, Walt Wilson (missing "A" player); -8 under in sudden death playoff on first hole. First sudden death playoff in PGO. Walt sinks a 25 foot uphill putt on the first playoff hole for the win. 1993 - 48 players, Gary Polglaze, Denny Vermilye, Dave Filipski, Mike Filipski; -8; The Filipski Brothers take up golf! Rookie year for both of them. They consume $56 of beer on the course on their way to their first PGO victory, riding on the backs of Slammer Polglaze and Denny Vermilye. 1994 - 44 players, Keith Gansberg, Roger Limbach, Steve Schaich, Eric Steinke; -8; Sudden Death playoff with three teams. Pat Special/Dick Fregin's teammates leave early, crippling them for the playoff. The Iowa Team doesn't get a good drive off on the first hole and the win goes to Gansberg's team. 1995 - 56 players, Reg Johnson,
Dan Hanson, Max Tyrrell, Craig Cardella; -7; Johnson asks to tee
off in the front of the order since he doesn't think they'll be in
contention and would like some time to drink. The team gels and they
come away with a victory. Steve Schaich becomes first player in PGO
history to be Black X'd for unsportsmanlike conduct (mooning Kurt Dickey
on 18th green while Kurt is hitting his approach shot).
1997 – 52 players, Keith Gansberg, Rufus Vermilye,
Dave Filipski, Larry Kincade –5. Sudden death playoff won on first
hole; Miserable slow rain coming down throughout the entire day. 1998 – 36
players, Gary Polglaze, Art Habegger, Dave Ancona, Sam Moen; -7,
Sudden Death playoff extends to second hole against the defending
champion team. Polglaze puts his putt from the top of the sloping 2nd
green (40 feet away) to within a couple of feet and then watch in awe as
the defending champs all miss a 3 foot right to left breaking putt.
1999 – 35 players, Gary Polglaze, Art Habegger, Dave Ancona, Sam Moen; -7; 2nd consecutive win. Another sudden death playoff ends quickly on the first hole. Player Tim McGuire starts controversy by showing up with newly acquired fiancé and makes his golf partner walk alongside his cart while the fiancé rides in luxury! Rather than Black Xing him we decide to "Pink Shirt" him for 2000. 2000 - 40 players, Dale Baker, Rob Burgmeier, Ron Hansen, Ron Humpal; -7; Ron Hansen's chip from just off the edge of the green to birdie the 18th hole is the deciding shot as they win by one stroke over the next two teams. 2001 - 48 players, Scott Krebs, David Niksich, John Rogus, Walt Wilson; -7; Scott Krebs sinks a 25 foot putt on the 18th green for a birdie that proves to be the deciding shot, beating out three other teams finishing at -6. Gansberg/Neas defeat Steinke/Rogus in Dart championship. 2002 - Two day event; 52 players, Alex Sparks, Rick Bonney, Corky Belobraydich, Rich Macko; -8; Shoot a solid 32-32 to win by one stroke over two other teams. Friday format is a two man best ball with 6 team sudden death shoot-out. Won by Keith Gansberg/Mike Filipski over Brendan McKernan/Walt Wilson. Gansberg net eagles the fifth and final playoff hole for the win. 2003 - No PGO. 2004 - Two day event: Friday Shootout - 40 players; Karl Schmitt/Scott Krebs win A Flight; Dave Ancona/Allan Atkinson win B Flight; Marty Bieschke/Eric Steinke win C Flight; Schmitt/Krebs win overall Playoff. Saturday; 52 players, 13 teams. Three way tie for first at -9 under par. Polglaze, D. Vermilye, Bowie, Moen win playoff on first hole with a par. Other teams were Bedell, Neas, Pelland, Schmitz & Mikkelson, Schaich, Kincade, Spear. 2005 - Two day event: Friday Shootout - A Flight Winners: Tim Olrick/Ed Lawdan; B Flight winners: Dan Hanson/Ron Vermilye; C Flight Winners:Greig DeSautel/Walt Wilson; Playoff Champs: Dan Hanson/Ron Vermilye; Saturday PGO Event: Tim Olrick, Ed Lawdan, Ron Vermilye, Eric Steinke win the event finishing at -8 under par. Darts won by Rob Burgmeier and Roger Sweeney. 2006 - Two day event: Friday Shootout - A Flight Winners: Karl Schmitt/Ron Bedell; B Flight winners: Denny Vermilye/Tony Bowie; C Flight Winners: Steve Schaich/Eric Steinke; Playoff won by Denny Vermilye/Tony Bowie defeating Steve Shaich/Eric Steinke on the third hole, first time a Friday shootout went an extra hole to decide it. Schaich sets new Stableford record of 65 points! (Sandbagger). Saturday's PGO Event; Gary Polglaze, Reggie Johnson, Pat Special & Chuck Passo win event finishing at -7 under par. Dart Tournament won by Kurt Dickey/Denny Vermilye. 2007 - Two Day Event: Relocated to Devil's Head Resort, Baraboo, WI. Friday Shootout (32 Players) - A Flight Winners: Ron Hansen/Dale Baker; B Flight Winners: Ron Vermilye/Allan Atkinson; C Flight Winners: Steve Schaich/Rick Fulbright; Playoff won by Ron Vermilye/Allan Atkinson. Saturday's PGO Event (11 Teams, 44 players): Winning team of Ron Bedell, Dave Ancona, Mike Wherlock & Sam Moen finishing at -6 under par. Easy Ancona sinks a 40 foot putt on the 18th green for a birdie to give them the victory. Two other teams come in at -5 under for second place. Ron Bedell/Allan Atkinson win Dart tournament. LD - Matt Schmitz; CTP - Rudy Humpal. 2008 - PGO Finale; Friday Two Man Shootout; Brendan McKernan/Steve Hepburn win overall championship; Flight winners: A;Ron Bedell/Kurt Dickey; Flight B: McKernan/Hepburn; Flight C: Dave Filipski, Chuck Passo; Saturday Tournament; -9 under par; Ron Bedell, Ron Vermilye, Dave Ancona & Sam Moen; 2nd PLace at -8: Karl Schmitt, Kevin Hanson, Terry Hubert & Greig DeSautel; Three teams tie for third place. Dart tournament won by first year player Ryan Pelland and Rick Fulbright; All family team enters for first time: Jack, Ryan, Drew, Blake Pelland and finish at +16 over par.
